Facebook Timeline, Open Graph and the emergence of DNA marketing…

I’ve been playing with Facebook’s new Timeline capability for the past few days and have found it quite intriguing. There’s been a few polls out there asking how people feel about it, using terms like “cool” and “creepy”. Not surprisingly, as with any change to Facebook over the last couple of years, creepy seems to be winning.

As I mentioned in my opening sentence, I actually find it quite interesting. For some time now I’ve given some thought to the process of capturing my life story. I’ve maintained a journal for a few years, but that’s more “day-to-day” thoughts, capturing events and thoughts about something that happened. What I’ve really been interested in is creating a chronological roadmap of my life. My college roommate has done this via a series of time-oriented short stories. While an interesting read, it really doesn’t have the “timeline” look and feel in which I am interested. READ MORE »

Let the great migration begin…

Now that we’ve got a couple of weeks under out belt with Google+ and the industry pundits have weighed in on the likes and dislikes of the new platform, it’s time to start thinking about the future. Whoa, you say… it’s only been TWO weeks. Hey, in the world of  internet/social networking weeks are like dog years.

I kind of have some “crow to eat” with this post – yummy… For well over a year now I’ve been predicting the total demise of Myspace. On the surface, if you look at what’s happened over the past 30 days, I could actually make the case that I was right. After all, $35M is a paltry sum to pay for what was once a darling of the social networking world. But things change in this industry. The introduction of Google+ into the mix might just be a good thing for Myspace, distracting media attention away from it just long enough for it to regroup, re-brand and reemerge. Time will tell. As I mentioned earlier, we’re working with dog years here so it shouldn’t take long before I really do know if I need to get out the fork and knife. READ MORE »

Could Google be on to something? Maybe…

I’ve not been very kind to Google when it comes to social networking. I want to be more positive, but I can’t find a reason, so I remain skeptical.

Google+ … Looks pretty nice. Got some pretty slick features – not enough to change the course of social networking, but pretty cool nonetheless. Lots of press and “buzz” (sorry, couldn’t help myself…). But I don’t see Facebook cowering in the corner from fear.

If you listen to Google they’ve figured out how social networking should really work. Hmmm… kind of reminds me of what they said about Google Wave – “this is how email would look if it had been invented today“… Yeah, right – everybody drank that Koolaid, didn’t they… READ MORE »

Google Map Maker – crowdsourcing done well

Apr28th

A lot of my posts about Google focus on areas where I scratch my head and wonder why they don’t do a better job (at least in my opinion). As you can see from my last post, I’m still puzzled and bemused over their social networking strategy. But Google obviously does a lot of things very well, and in many cases I have defended them where others felt differently.

One thing Google does well is crowdsourcing. Look at Google Map Maker as an example.  Map Maker has been around for about 3 years, but was just recently released in the US. If you use Google Maps on a regular basis you’ll notice that there is a continuous increase in the amount of location-specific information that appears on the maps. Merchants, public facilities, parks, points of interest, etc. One has to question the future need for physical maps and services like AAA. READ MORE »

The next “gen” of Google’s social networking plan…

For all you techies out there (especially those from the old school) you’re probably aware of the term “+1″. The next copy (gen) of a dataset to be created during a batch cycle for example. Every time you run the cycle you crank out another copy of the dataset, keeping a few of the old gens (-1, -2, etc.) around for backup. You know the routine.

Look’s like Google is designing its social networking strategy after the same concept, naming its latest attempt “+1″. I think this is actually a good move on their part. Given the failure of all their previous attempts, they can now just roll out the “+1″ version, obviating the need to come up with a catchy name for each new version… READ MORE »
